In Leverkusen, conservationists are happy about the birth of four small dormouse. These delicate animals that are active at night and rely on the survival of their kind have recently seen the light of day in a nesting box. Erich Schulz, the chairman of Nabu Leverkusen, emphasizes the importance of these developments: "This year there is enough food with boxers and acorns, which is crucial for the survival of the young animals." This rearing is a fascinating and educational project that extends over many years.

The NABU has set up a special webcam that enables the activities of the dormouse to observe live. This innovative offer has been used for ten years and has already captivated hundreds of thousands of people from over 60 countries. Project coordinator Regine Kossler explains: "The project is unique worldwide. Our cameras show the mammals in their natural habitat." The life cycle of the animals becomes understandable for many people and creates awareness of species protection.

The newborns who weigh just five grams need a lot of warmth in the first few days. The mothers are very caring in this phase and bring leaves to keep their boys warm. The NABU team regularly provides information about the development of the animals: "Since warm weather is imminent, there is a great probability that the young animals will soon be better to be seen." The small dormouse develop quickly and start testing their climbing skills after about four weeks. The rearing only takes over the mother, while the father cannot be seen in the nesting box during this time.

Every year the dormouse behaves differently, depending on the weather and food supply. This year they concentrated on only two of the seven nesting boxes, with up to nine dormouse to be found in a box in a particularly enjoyable situation. These behavioral adjustments not only bring changes for the animals, but also for the observers who follow the development of the group.

The project is encouraged by the German Postcode lottery and conveys an important feeling for nature conservation. The webcam is expected to remain active until mid -October, so that interested parties can still get an insight into the life of the dormouse. The relevance of such a project is not only evident in research, but also in strengthening the sense of community and responsibility towards our environment. "We are very happy about the great interest and support," added Erich Schulz.
