Presidential election in Rwanda: Kagame before a clear victory - green party and independent candidate without chance
In Rwanda, incumbent Paul Kagame is clearly ahead in the presidential election and is already emerging for a clear victory. According to the election commission, Kagame has reached more than 99 percent after counting almost 79 percent of all votes. His two opponents, Frank Habineza from the Green Party and the independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana, are both significantly below one percent.
The official result is expected to be announced on July 27th. Over nine million people, including two million first voters, were called for election. In addition to the presidential election, it was also decided on the occupation of the parliament.
many challenges for Rwanda
The upcoming fourth term of Paul Kagame raises many questions. Although he has been an officially president since 2000, he has been considered the strong man of Rwanda since 1994. At that time he ended the genocide of the Tutsi as a leader of the RPF and then took over important political offices.
The Rwandian Patriotic Front (RPF), Kagames Party, is likely to emerge from the parliamentary election. Over 670 candidates applied for around 80 parliamentary seats. A special feature in Rwanda is that female MPs have to provide a majority in parliament in order to meet the legal provisions.
obstacles to the opposition
Politics in Rwanda is not without controversy. Two opposition politicians were not admitted as candidates, which was clearly criticized by human rights organizations. The persecution of oppositions in Rwanda is also skill in the democratic challenges of the East African country with a population of over 14 million people.
It remains to be seen how Rwanda will develop under the leadership of Paul Kagame in the coming years and whether democracy in the country will be further strengthened or possibly questioned.
