VfL Gummersbach II starts the 3rd league with a tight defeat
In the first game of the new season, VfL Gummersbach II's handball players had a bumpy start. In an exciting meeting with Team Handball Lippe II, the players from Gummersbach lost 25:28. At first glance, one might think that the defense work is the strength of the young team, but in the end this was not enough for a point win.
Goncalo Miranda and Jan Schwenzfeier, the coaches of the VfL reserve, had set their protégés well for the game. Especially at the beginning, the Gummersbacher were largely able to keep the dangerous backmar shooters of the guests, Ralfs Geislers and Hark Hansen. In the 15th minute, however, Thorben Hübke, the circuit runner from Lippe, began to play his strengths and already scored his third goal. This meant that Anel Durmic shone as a goalkeeper of Gummersbach by defending decisive litters that could have enlarged the backlog.
Introduction to the 3rd league
Despite the solid defense, the attack for the Gummersbacher remained a challenge. Players like Vincent Kreiselmeier had difficulty prevailing against the Lippe defensive, which led to an unsatisfactory score at halftime. With a 9:11 deficit, the Gummersbacher had to get up to make the second half more successfully.
The spectators experienced an exciting second half in which the Handball Lippe II team took the lead through the strong parades of their goalkeeper Leon Goldbecker with 17:12. But the fighting spirit of the Gummersbacher could not be broken. The younger players, many of them with their first appearance in men's handball, showed that they were ready to touch the intensity of the 3. League.
The talented Tom Koschek, who became the best scorer of his team with ten goals, is particularly noteworthy. The team could not be discouraged even in critical moments. Konstantin Kasch prevailed in the attack and scored the important connection goal for 22:23 in the 54th minute. This gave hope for a possible turn.Unfortunately, the guests demonstrated the necessary routine and security in the last minutes of the game. Goldbecker, who delivered an excellent performance for Lippe in the goal, did not leave the Gummersbacher's final offensive to breathe. In the crucial situations, Schwenzfeier's boys were missing from the "Smartness", as he himself found. This made the difference and prevented a successful comeback.
The next challenges are already around the corner, because next Saturday the U20 players of the handball academy will meet TSG A-H Bielefeld. It is now crucial for the coaches and the team to learn from the experience of the opening game and to develop in the coming time. Schwenzfeier emphasized the need to get used to the intensity of the league faster and make smarter decisions. "This is our mission for the next few weeks," said the trainer.
In this first game, both the potential and the challenges that the young players of VfL Gummersbach II have to face revealed themselves. However, the positive side remains the good cover and the increasing form in the further course of the game. It remains to be seen how the team will develop in the coming weeks.
