Joy in the border triangle: ESC 2025 in Basel awakens high expectations

The Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) will take place in Basel in 2025, and the anticipation in the German border towns is already tangible. The decision to choose the third largest city in Switzerland as a venue not only caused enthusiasm, but also aroused high expectations. The Mayor of Lörrach Jörg Lutz was optimistic about the German press agency and emphasized that the ESC will have a positive appearance on the entire Dreiländer region Switzerland-France-Germany. He is convinced that the electrical atmosphere of the competition will also be noticeable in Lörrach.

The motto of the ESC 2025, "overcome borders" could not be more apt. The final will take place on May 17th in Basel, not far from the German border. In an exciting selection process, Basel was able to prevail against Geneva, a decision announced by the European Radio Union (EBU). More than 35 countries will take part in the festival that pulls more than 150 million viewers in front of the screens annually, while millions of others are exciting on platforms such as YouTube.

tourist opportunities

Preparations for the big event already show the first positive signs. Lörrach, with almost 49,000 inhabitants, assumes that the city will benefit from an increase in tourism. "Numerous visitors will come to Lörrach and discover that the city has many facets to offer," said Lutz. This could be of large advantages for the local economy and the hotel industry.

Diana Stöcker, the mayor of Weil am Rhein, agreed Lutz and emphasized that such events represent a profit for the entire region. Because on the Rhine, which is located directly on the border with Switzerland and counts around 31,000 inhabitants, close cooperation with the Swiss authorities is also planning to clarify security and infrastructure issues.

economic effects and preparations

The economy could benefit significantly from the ESC. Lörrach's mayor Lutz made it clear in an application video that he wants to position the region as the "40-country corner", which underlines the multicultural possibilities of the event. At the same time, in Basel there is already an increasing demand for accommodation, since the prices for hotels have already increased significantly before the official announcement.

The event takes place in the St. Jakobshalle, a well -known location that has the potential to house up to 12,000 people. In addition, the spectacle is transferred to the nearby St. Jakob-Park football stadium, which offers space for 20,000 people. The city of Basel expects a total cost of around CHF 30 to CHF 35 million (around CHF 37 million) to carry out the competition.

Switzerland has clearly established itself as a venue. The winning of the ESC by the participant Nemo in Malmö laid the foundation for the upcoming event. The competition, which is usually held by public media organizations from most European countries, brings a variety of musical talents to the big stage every year. The big spectacle thus goes into the next round and with emphasis on intercultural exchange and joint celebrations, the motto "overcome borders" in this context actually seems of special relevance.
