In a current Facebook post, a vacationer from Timmendorfer Strand expresses his resentment about the pricing: "Pure usury!"

Causes of the price increases

The decline in potato harvest in Germany as a result of unfavorable weather conditions contributes significantly to the higher prices. As early as 2024, the Federal Statistical Office reported a drastic increase in raw material costs, which is due, among other things, to a 43.8 percent prize in March compared to the previous month. This shows that not only the fries themselves, but the entire food chain is under pressure.

Mixed reactions on the Internet

The reactions to the displeasure of the vacationer are diverse. While some users have an understanding of the high prices and point out that restaurateurs also have to bear wages and lease costs, there are also critical voices that find pricing as exaggerated. A blogger comments: “Even to blame, who buys this, supply and demand.”

The numbers behind the prices

Despite these high prices, the French fries index shows Hello Fresh that the average price for fries in Germany was last five euros. This represents an additional contradiction - especially when you consider that the tested prices for collection came from at least 30 different restaurants, with price range of two to 6.90 euros. In the Timmendorfer Strand region, however, the market seems to be considerably more expensive, which only reinforces the concern of the consumer.

Future of pricing policy

The discussion about the high prices for simple snacks in seaside resorts is open to a fundamental problem: The pricing, which depends heavily on regional market conditions, is increasingly influenced by external factors such as crop yields and raw material costs. How the situation will develop in the course of summer remains to be seen, but the outcry of consumers could possibly cause the restaurateurs to reconsider their offers.
