During his summer trip, State Secretary Guido Wendt visited the University of Lübeck on Tuesday. The focus was on the importance of current research projects, especially in the area of cyber security.

Importance of the Open Topic third-party fund

A central theme of the visit was the open top-top third-party fund, which is of great relevance as a new funding instrument of the State of Schleswig-Holstein. This fund supports universities in increasing their chances of success for funding from the German Research Foundation and the EU. Wendt found that 112 applications have already been submitted, of which 14 project ideas have received a financial grant of 700,000 euros. This shows how lively and diverse the research landscape in Schleswig-Holstein is.

cyber security as an urgent research field

The State Secretary also had the opportunity to discuss projects in the field of cybercrime with specialist representatives of the Lübeck University of Technology and the Lübeck University of Music. cybsecurity denotes the protection of computer systems against theft or damage. In view of the increasing digital threats, research in this area is becoming increasingly important. Helge Illig, the manager of the IT service center at the University of Lübeck, presented a pilot project in cooperation with Cisco, which develops a reference architecture to better protect universities from cyber attacks.

collaboration with the Schleswig-Holstein police

Another important aspect of exchange was the cooperation between the Institute for IT security at the University and the Schleswig-Holstein state police. Prof. Thomas Eisenbarth, director of the institute, explained how this cooperation is useful for both sides. Police departments are given access to tailor-made training in the areas of IT security and cybercrime, which promotes knowledge transfer between science and practice. Such initiatives are essential in order to effectively counter the challenges in the field of cybercrime.

outlook for future developments

The visit of State Secretary Wendt illustrates the commitment of the State of Schleswig-Holstein to actively support the research landscape and to promote innovation-changing partnerships between universities and practical institutions. This is important not only for universities, but also for the entire society, since the challenges in the digital world are becoming increasingly complex.
