University of Lübeck asks 2,500 mothers for midwife supply in SH

The University of Lübeck has the goal of capturing the experiences of young parents in the field of midwife supply and has started a survey for this purpose. Around 2,500 mothers are interviewed that gave birth in Schleswig-Holstein in the period from August 1, 2023 to July 31, 2024. The survey is intended to provide information on how the mothers perceive their care by midwives.

A focus of the survey is on the choice of place of birth and the impressions that the mothers made when looking for a midwife. The experience with the midwife during pregnancy, birth and in the puerperium are also examined. The university emphasizes that the collected answers should serve as the basis for targeted improvement measures.

improvement in midwife supply

The initiator of the project, Katja Stahl, speaks of an upcoming step to better coordinate the midwife supply in Schleswig-Holstein. The long -term goal is to create a central point of contact for both clinics as well as for midwives, pregnant women and women as information source.

Christiane Schwarz, the head of the midwifery course, emphasizes that this is the first systematic recording of the needs of young families with regard to obstetrical care by midwives in the region. She emphasizes that it is important to collect this information in order to provide politicians well -founded indications to improve existing structures.

A unique aspect of this survey is that Schleswig-Holstein was the first federal state to introduce a midwife course, which has been the case since the winter semester 2017/2018. This decision has given the state a pioneering role in Germany when it comes to training midwives. An evaluation of the results from the current survey is expected in 2025.

The survey is supported by the Ministry of Justice and Health, which provides funds of 500,000 euros from the supply security fund. Minister of Health Kerstin von der Kecken (CDU) emphasizes the valuable work of the midwives, which for many families represent an essential part of the start.

The survey represents an important step to check the quality of midwifery medical care and, if necessary, improve. With the collected findings, both the midwives themselves and the political decision -makers can be instructed to ensure optimal care for expectant mothers and young families.
