Historical Lüneburg town hall: renovation with heavy crane and roofing work.
revitalization of the historic city council in Lüneburg
An important construction project causes a stir in the city of Lüneburg: the historic town hall is subjected to comprehensive renovation to protect the magnificent ceiling paintings and historical halls. For nine months, the city has been working on the renewal of around 1000 square meters of the roof area above the Fürstensaal wing to preserve the historical treasures.
The renovation work has already started, and a huge crane on the construction site at the Ochsenmarkt indicates the imposing project. With 13 concrete blocks of 1550 kilograms each, the crane ensures stability and will soon carry heavy roof tiles upwards. The preparations for the roofing work above the princely hall wing of the town hall are already in progress to install the northern and southern facade and to remove the old bricks.
The protective measures are urgently required because the old roof was deformed by storms and lively damage to the historical structures caused. In order to protect the magnificent ceiling paintings and the stucco, a rainproof lower roof and reinforced wooden beams are installed. The restoration of the ceiling paintings in the historical ballrooms will begin in autumn, and the total cost of the project will be around one million euros.
Thanks to a funding of 450,000 euros from the special monument protection program of the Federal Commissioner for Culture and the Media, the city of Lüneburg can carry out this significant restoration. The revitalization of the historic city councilor helps to preserve the cultural heritage of the city and to maintain the historical sights for future generations.
