Fighting flood risk: Magdeburg team develops AI drone!

In a groundbreaking initiative, a team from the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences plans to develop AI-supported drones in order to recognize cracks in dams and bridges at an early stage. Under the direction of Professor Bernd Ettmer, the four-year project aims to identify both the above and underground damage. With the help of autonomously flying drones and special AI technologies, the images collected by the drones are analyzed in order to quickly recognize and report potential dangers. The basics of the project that started at the beginning of this year are currently being developed.

dr. Daniel Hesse, who is responsible for the drone operations, emphasizes that the drones are currently operated with standard RGB cameras. The next phase is to test special sensors such as spectral cameras and thermal cameras to optimize the project results. The goal is to train the AI in such a way that it analyzes during the flight damage and effectively supports the security checks. By 2027, the researchers hope to use the drone as an important building block for flood prevention in order to minimize the dangers of floods.
