Magdeburg's airport: Future as a commercial area in the discussion

Stand: 29.08.2024 02:30 a.m.

On the website of the city administration of Magdeburg, a new proposed decision is discussed, which is the first serious consideration of the conversion of the Magdeburg airfield to a commercial area. The economic deputy, Sandra Yvonne Stieger from the CDU, illustrates the importance of this plan and announces that this could lead to intensive discussions in the city.

Magdeburg airfield, which currently has no active function as an airport, could be converted into an important industrial and commercial area. In Magdeburg there are only a few suitable areas for newly settling companies, which has tempted the city administration to consider alternative locations. Stieger has announced that there are two potential locations: one in the north of the city in the area of Große Silberberg and Sülzegund, as well as the airfield in the south. "We will recommend the city council to test the advantages and disadvantages of these locations thoroughly," she said in an interview.

Airport offers advantages for commercial settlements

According to the proposal from the Department of Economic Affairs and Tourism, the airfield harbors some advantages for the development of a commercial area. The areas would largely be in the possession of the city and the traffic connections due to the proximity to the A14 motorway and well -developed roads have already been given. These conditions make the location attractive for future companies.

The planned new industrial area would include an area of 144 hectares, which would enable not to seal any agricultural areas for the first phase of development. This is highlighted as a positive aspect, as it says: "We have to recognize the potential of the Magdeburg business location and actively shape the future." Stieger emphasizes that not all suggestions will be popular, but are necessary to secure economic progress.

An additional incentive to search for new commercial space results from the planned settlement of Intel. The city administration expects an increased demand for space, since Intel is expected to make significant investments that numerous suppliers and service providers could attract. According to Intel, the annual transfer volume could be around 1.5 billion euros, from which local companies could also benefit.

The Magdeburg city council will decide on October 17 whether the administration will follow the proposal and carry out a thorough examination of the two potential commercial space. Stieger expresses the expectation that these discussions could cause both approval and contradiction, because such a rededication could not only open up economic opportunities, but also change the face of the city considerably.
