Trümper as a consultant: guide for Magdeburg's Intel-Zukunft

The city of Magdeburg is at the beginning of a new era, since the Tech-Riese Intel has announced its decision to settle a new work here. This not only represents an important step for the local economy, but could also change the entire cityscape and the surrounding area sustainably. In August 2022, Lutz Trümper, the former mayor of Magdeburg, took over the role of the advisor for the Intel settlement and will support the city in various matters in the coming months.

Trümper will primarily take care of the coordination with the surrounding communities and the state of Saxony-Anhalt. His many years of experience in local politics is a great advantage to successfully master the challenges associated with such a large project. The city administration evaluates it as an insider that can bring in valuable insights and strategies.

environmental measures and infrastructure

A central aspect of the Intel project are the necessary environmental measures that must be implemented before the actual settlement in 2023. These measures serve to compensate for environmental pollution and are crucial to protect the local flora and fauna. Magdeburg must adhere to a comprehensive catalog of measures by the Saxony-Anhalt Foundation, which includes replacement plantings for biotopes and the relocation of Feldhamstern.

The planning of the development plan for the Intel resettlement has already been unanimously approved by the city council, which is an important step towards the implementation of the project. Despite the high level of consent, some representatives of the left and green stated that they criticized that many questions about traffic and the supply of water and energy have remained unclear. An environmentally friendly traffic concept that includes cycle paths and an S-Bahn connection is therefore of great importance.

The planned transport connections also includes a connection of the Intel site to the existing transport network. Saxony-Anhalt's Minister of Transport Lydia Hüskens presented the first plans in an inspection of the future work area. These include bus connections and the perspective to introduce a tram line. This not only improves the accessibility of the new factory, but also the surrounding communities benefit from this development.

water use and expert estimates

Another remarkable topic in connection with the Intel project is the planned water use from the Elbe for production. In June 2022, Dietrich Borchardt, an expert from the Helmholtz Center for Water Resources and Environment, commented unproblematic. He explained that the amounts taken were not so high that they had a significant influence on the river, not even in times of low water. This assessment is given new importance, while some districts in Saxony-Anhalt have already issued water withdrawal bans for surface waters due to the continuing dryness.

The settlement of Intel is not just an isolated project for Magdeburg; It could have far -reaching effects on the entire region. The work is expected to have a high water requirement, which is why a connection to the Elbe is planned to support the production processes and to ensure the water supply.

A visit to a business delegation from Saxony-Anhalt in Ireland in May 2022 illustrated the state government's interest in this project. The delegation attended the existing Intel factory in Kildare to get insights into the advanced production methods and water and energy management. The location in Ireland is one of the most modern worldwide and thus serves as a model for the planned settlement in Magdeburg.

Preparations for the Intel resettlement are in full swing and are under the supervision of competent partners to ensure that the project makes both ecologically and economically sensible. It remains to be seen how the situation in relation to environmental measures, water withdrawal and traffic planning will develop, while the city of Magdeburg is preparing for significant change.
