Alexander Schweitzer will take over the helm of Malu Dreyer
"The Malu Dreyer era ends: Alexander Schweitzer before election to the Prime Minister in Rhineland-Palatinate"
The upcoming change in the office of Prime Minister in Rhineland-Palatinate marks the end of an era. Malu Dreyer says goodbye to politics after eleven years to make room for her successor Alexander Schweitzer. The 63-year-old Dreyer, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, enjoys great popularity across party borders.
The choice of the new prime minister is considered a matter of form, since Schweitzer has the support of the three traffic lights with a total of 54 votes-three more than necessary. Schweitzer is elected Prime Minister with 51 votes from a total of 101 MPs. His family, including his wife and two sons, will be present in the election in the state parliament in Mainz.
After reading Dreyer's letter of withdrawal and short speeches, the new Prime Minister is sworn in. Schweitzer, lawyer and social politician like his predecessor Dreyer, will outline the country's future plans in his inaugural speech. A government declaration is expected after the summer break.
In the course of the change of government, Dörte Schall is also sworn in as the new minister in the State Chancellery. The 46-year-old Ludwigshafener will take over Schweitzer Ministry of Social Affairs, work, transformation and digitization. The rest of the ministerial council remains unchanged.
The upcoming change at the head of the Rhineland-Palatinate government marks a new section in the political landscape of the federal state. While Dreyer was the first woman to do pioneering work in this office, Schweitzer is now competing to continue her successful work and to conduct the country until the state election in 2026.
The transition in the government of Rhineland-Palatinate also symbolizes a generation change and the continuity of political stability in the state. The election of Alexander Schweitzer as Prime Minister not only marks the end of an era, but also the beginning of a new chapter in the political history of Rhineland-Palatinate.
