Mainz - it's not just a refrigerator, it is a lesson in food science! From September 9th to 12th, the impressive XXL refrigerator comes from the initiative "Too good for the bin!" to the city of Mainz. This innovative campaign by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) brings important information on the correct storage of food directly to the front door of the citizens. The goal is clear: Consumer: to sensitize the inside and to draw attention to the problem of food waste.
The refrigerator is a real experience. With a height of over four meters, it not only offers impressive visual scenes that demonstrate the storage of food, but also interactive stories that amaze visitors. Younger guests in particular will enjoy it when you see how bread is pushing yourself or cheese cleans his subject. This entertaining type of knowledge transfer ensures that information about the optimal storage of fruit, vegetables and other foods is conveyed playfully.
The tour through Germany
The XXL fridge tours by ten German cities until October 17th. The start took place on August 14th in Berlin, and Mainz is already the fifth stop of this exciting journey. The Rhineland-Palatinate consumer center becomes active on site to give passers-by valuable tips and tricks for food storage.
Storing food correctly is a challenge for many. Which foods belong in the refrigerator door and which should stay better on the shelf? These are just a few of the questions that the message "too good for the bin!" answered. The initiative has been trying to raise awareness of food waste since 2012 and to encourage consumers: inside, to rethink their handling of food. The importance of the initiative
In Germany, around eleven million tons of food waste are incurred annually - an alarming number that leads to the Bamel with its national strategy to reduce food waste to halve food losses. This strategy is diverse and not only includes private households, but also the areas of primary production, processing, retail and out-of-home catering. The refrigerator is only part of a larger plan to support the citizens of maintaining a more conscious handling of food.
In addition to the refrigerator, legal measures are also checked to facilitate food donations. The BMEL is also in close exchange with business representatives in order to make significant progress and to further strengthen the commitment against food waste.
