Riedbahn closure from July 15, 2024: New line tours and challenges for local public transport

The upcoming general renovation of the Riedbahn between Mannheim and Frankfurt/Main from July 15, 2024 will throw its shadow ahead. The Zweckverband Public Passenger Transport Rhineland-Palatinate Süd criticizes the implementation of the complete timetable change in the course of the blocking.

The closure of the Riedbahn leads to a reorganization of train traffic in the region. The routes between Mainz and Worms as well as Mainz and Mannheim are particularly affected. In addition to reduced access in regional traffic, freight traffic is also replaced by buses at night in order to avoid impairments during the day.

To compensate for the restricted train traffic, new lines are introduced. The S 6 now runs from Mannheim via Worms and Mainz to Wiesbaden. The RE 4 and RE 14 are restructured into a new city express line (SE) from Mannheim via Mainz to Frankfurt/W. This leads to changes in the pendulum trips between Speyer and Karlsruhe.

In addition to the restrictions on train traffic, adjustments to the bus area are also required. Talks between the municipal regional authorities and the ZSPNV led to new bus driving times and additional trips for school traffic between Mainz and Nackenheim.

The simultaneous blocking of the Riedbahn and the Rheinhessenbahn ensures further challenges in local public transport. The DB Infrago plans extensive renovations south of Alzey, which leads to further restrictions on train traffic. The availability of drivers and buses is viewed critically.

In order to alleviate the effects of the Riedbahn closure, new regional express trains between Karlsruhe and Bingen are used via the Alsenzbahn. These should partially compensate for the missing intercity lines between the Oberrhein region and the Middle Rhine.

ZSPNV Süd calls for better coordination and preparation of general renovations in rail transport to ensure a reliable connection to passengers. The noticeable restrictions on train traffic and rail replacement are pending the passengers with great challenges.
