New power structure: AfD despite success of challenges in the local parliaments

The local administrations in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania face new challenges after the AfD has won the most votes in the electoral cities in Rostock and Schwerin on June 9th in the independent cities of Rostock and Schwerin. Despite these successes, political scientist Wolfgang Muno sees the party faced with relatively small opportunities to take over the chair in district days or municipal representatives.

The so -called "fire wall", which serves to keep the AfD away from important positions, has received many holes in recent years, according to Muno. Nevertheless, in his view, it would be undemocratic to always have the strongest party to be taken over automatically, as it is about finding a democratic majority. Such an automatic priority would undermine the democratic principles.

Struggle for the curtains in the local parliaments

in Rostock has already been signaled that the established parties are determined to prevent a possible AfD candidate for the citizens' presidential post. Nevertheless, the AfD Michael Meister nominated as a candidate for the meeting in Rostock. In Schwerin, on the other hand, the AfD state chairman Leif-Erik Holm competes for the important position. The constituent meetings in which the chairpersons are elected will take place in various counties in the coming weeks.

According to the municipal constitution of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the chairman is elected from the middle of the municipal council or the district council. It is common for the strongest faction to put the chairman, but this is not a mandatory rule. The constituent sessions are planned in the next few weeks and the oldest MP leads them.

Democratic processes and president of the age

The coming weeks will show how the democratic processes in the local parliaments work and whether the AfD will be able to fill important positions. The role of "Age President" who open and lead the meetings is also discussed. However, Muno emphasizes that this is a democratic process and there is no reason to concern if older MPs perform this function.

Overall, the local parliaments in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are facing a new structure of power, in which the AfD faces major challenges despite its success to fill important positions in the administrations.
