improved work-life balance for teachers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

13. July 2024

Teachers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will be better paid for their additional work in the future and will be given the opportunity to keep a long-term lesson hour account. These innovations are the result of intensive negotiations as part of the educational pact for "Good School 2030" and are to come into force from September 1, 2024. The state is investing around seven million euros a year to improve the remuneration of teachers.

The introduction of a uniform amount for all teaching positions from September 2024 and the planned further increase in November and February should benefit the teachers in the primary school teaching office. These measures are intended to make working conditions in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania more attractive and the additional work done appropriately.

Long-term work-life balance for teachers

For teachers who want to pay additional hours and want to compensate for them later through leisure, there is the possibility to set up a long -term lesson hour account. This offers teachers the flexibility of making their working hours better and getting more control over their work-life balance. The creation of this option was necessary to counteract the shortage of teachers and to enable long -term relief of the teachers.

Positive development in the field of education

The partnership in the educational pact for "Good School 2030" signals a positive development in the education sector of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The improved remuneration and the introduction of the lesson hour account are steps in the right direction to relieve teachers and show their appreciation for their commitment. The partnership between Minister of Education Simone Oldenburg, finance minister Dr. Heiko Geue and the Upbringing and Science Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (GEW MV) is an important step to give the teachers the recognition they deserve.

Further development in the field of education

The planned measures are only the beginning. The partners of the educational pact have other points on their agenda, including the reduction in workload for teachers, the reform of the teacher education law, the revision of the legal clerkship, an evaluation of the side entry and the consequences analysis of a lowering of the lesson obligation. These steps are crucial to continuously improve the education system in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and to relieve the teachers in the long term.
