Steffi Lemke starts moor climate protection project on the Baltic Sea coast!
Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke started an important moor climate protection project on the Baltic Sea coast in Bresewitz. During her visit, she handed over a special check of around 27 million euros to support the renaturation of a total of 850 hectares of coastal bogs by 2034. These bogs are important carbon stores that bind large quantities of CO2 and are therefore at the center of the action program of natural climate protection (Ank).
lemke emphasized the multi -layered advantages of intact bogs: they regulate the water balance and contribute to reducing extreme weather events. A model should be created with this program that also serves as a model for similar projects in the future. BFN President Sabine Riewenherm added that intact ecosystems not only do climate protection, but also offer the habitat for a variety of rare species.
