90 years BSV KME: Insight into the world of visually impaired in Mettmann!
The blind and visually impaired association Kreis Mettmann (BSV KME) recently celebrated its 90th anniversary with an impressive exhibition in the Mettmann City Library. As part of the nationwide “week of seeing”, visitors were able to get to know various aids for visually impaired and blind people and make contacts. Tamara Ströter and Michaele Gurzinski, both affected by the degenerative disease retinitis pigmentosa, explained the challenges of everyday life and appealed to more awareness in road traffic. Ströter wishes that passers -by ask questions if help is needed, especially when crossing streets.
In addition to information stands, the organizers presented feelings to sensitize those present to the perception of blind people. Mabel Stickley, former disability officer, showed special glasses that simulate visual impairments. In addition, Ströter presented innovative technology such as "Voxivision", a cell phone that can recognize and read out texts. The LOC.ID app offers support for navigating road traffic. Visitors like Herwart Schütte reported everyday challenges, in particular through overgrown sidewalks, and the need to improve accessibility for the blind was a central topic of the event. The BSV continues to fight to raise awareness of this problem and find solutions. More information about this provides rp-online.de .
