The future of Erkelenz: International Garden Show as a way to structural change

In Erkelenz, big changes are imminent. The city could be the venue for the International Garden Show (IGA) in 13 years. This event would not only attract millions of visitors, but also an important thrust for structural change in the Rhenish area. In addition to Erkelenz, Mönchengladbach, Titz, Jüchen, Grevenbroich and Bedburg are also involved.

The financial challenges and opportunities of the IGA

The application for IGA in 2027 brings some financial challenges. Although up to 90 percent of the total required of over 300 million euros could be covered by funding, the municipalities still remain considerable costs.

A large part of the IGA income is to be generated by ticket sales. It is expected to visit 18.2 million people who could visit the garden show. In addition, around 4.1 million guests could stay in the region and thus generate additional income. Despite the potential income from ticket sales, there is a financing requirement of 315 million euros, with 230 million euros should flow into permanent investments. A implementation budget of around 85 million euros is expected.

The discussion in the city council

The decision to work for the application for the IGA was not undisputed. Some members of the city council expressed concerns about the long -term financial effects and the use of the garden show. Criticism came mainly from the FDP, which regarded borrowing and repayment for the IGA as a burden for future generations.

Nevertheless, there were also supporters of the project. Some politicians saw the IGA as an important part of structural change and as an opportunity to present the region and Erkelenz positively. Ultimately, despite some votes against the official application, the council voted, which is an important step for the future of the city.
