Rediscover Mönchengladbach: A call to the city dwellers
Mönchengladbach, a city with a historical heritage and hidden beauties, is faced with the challenge to regain lost reputation. Andreas Henke, habitat manager, is committed to upgrading the cityscape and showing the citizens how much quality of life is in their homeland. "My job is to convince the Mönchengladbacher of the beauty of their city," explains Henke.
The look behind the scenes
The city, like many others, also has to deal with the consequences of structural change. The decay of the textile industry and the upcoming farewell to lignite have left significant traces. The purchasing power is below the average of North Rhine-Westphalia. Despite these adversity, Henke and his team try to promote a positive mood: "We have to reinvent the city centers and bring people together with entrepreneurship."
The remarkable places in Mönchengladbach
The Rheydt Castle stands out among the many attractive places in the city, which is not only architecturally impressive, but also a cultural center. Only 45 minutes by train from Cologne, it offers numerous events and tours. The "Abteiberg Museum", designed by Hans Hollein, is one of the first museums that are considered a work of art themselves and is known for its outstanding exhibitions of contemporary art.
The Café Kontor at Adenauerplatz not only attracts locals, but also visitors like Benno for man, who made a coffee stop on his way to the Netherlands. Not only is excellent coffee served here, but also created a lively atmosphere that brings people from the neighborhood.
Cultural and gastronomic offers
The city invites you to explore and offers a variety of leisure opportunities. From the busy markets to the beautiful parks, Mönchengladbach is rich in natural and cultural treasures. Visitors who roam the old town discover cozy cafés and restaurants such as the St. Vith beer garden, where ancient beer has been served for over 400 years.
The efforts of the city administration and the habitat manager already show the first successes. Through innovative ideas and community projects, Mönchengladbach becomes a living place for locals and tourists. "There is plenty of space for ideas," says Zahra Campregher, the operator of the Café Kontor, and emphasizes the opportunities that exist in the city.
The challenges are great, but the motivation to revitalize the urban community is strong. Mönchengladbach may face challenges, but the people who live here believe in the potential of their city. And maybe, they hope, the Cologne and other visitors will soon discover the true face of Mönchengladbach.
