Dedicated to Feuchtwanger: Munich's literary legacy in the Lehel
Munich recognizes the writer Lion Feuchtwanger with its own place in Lehel
Lion Feuchtwanger was not only a well -known writer, but also a left intellectual who has made a name for himself worldwide. He was born in Munich and the city is now honored for his 140th birthday with his own place in the Lehel district.
The Lion Feuchtwanger-Platz is located at the intersection Thiersch- und Liebherrstraße, very close to the house, where Feuchtwanger spent his childhood. With this ceremony next Sunday, July 7th, the city of Munich would like to remind the writer and preserve its literary heritage.
Lion Feuchtwanger became known primarily with works such as "Jud Süß" and the waiting room trilogy. His book “Success” reflects Munich in times of crisis and criticizes the social grievances. Mayor Dieter Reiter praises Feuchtwanger for closely observing and criticizing the city society.
After Hitler's takeover in 1933, Lion Feuchtwanger had to leave Germany and fled his wife about France, Spain and Portugal to the USA. There he spent the rest of his life and continued his letter.
The solemn naming of the Lion Feuchtwanger-Platz is opened by Mayor Dominik Krause. Charlotte Knobloch, President of the Israelite Culture Community of Munich and Upper Bavaria, as well as the nephew of the writer, Edgar Feuchtwanger, will also take part in the ceremony. Students of the Wilhelmsgymnasium, Feuchtwanger's former school, will read from his work "Exile" and thus show the topicality of his literary work.
In 2024, the city of Munich, together with various cooperation partners, is planning the Feuchtwanger year, which will include readings, exhibitions and city tours. This is supposed to keep the legacy of Lion Feuchtwanger alive and his influence on the literary world will continue to be recognized.
