an unusual place for an owl family
The church in Podewall near Neubrandenburg is not only a place of calm and reflection, but also the home of a special owl family. This year, a barn family has settled in the church tower, and their six chicks are raised there by their proud parents.
barn owls as neighbors
Andreas Hofmann, owl expert, explains that veil owls like to live near people. They prefer to breed in barns and church towers, especially in nesting boxes that were specially attached to them. Although the grier population has decreased due to the modernization of agriculture, there are more barn pairs in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania this year. The choice of Podewall's church tower as a breeding ground is therefore no coincidence.
The characteristic white, heart -shaped facial veil makes the veil owls easily recognizable and distinguishes them from other owl species.
The importance of the
Andreas Hofmann confirms that the owl stock decreased sharply a few years ago. But thanks to the commitment of nature conservation organizations such as NABU, there are more veils in the region again. The owls in the Podewall church tower are a hopeful sign of the preservation of these fascinating birds.
