In this way, Neubrandenburg allotment gardeners summarize the mixed harvest

The allotment gardeners in Neubrandenburg experience mixed feelings this season. While some of them complain about measly harvests, others report on a wealth of fresh fruits and vegetables. Jürgen Wittwer, a pensioner from the eastern town of Neubrandenburg, is one of the dissatisfied gardeners. He can hardly enjoy his income this year. "The cherries were only a handful of it, last year the tree was still full," he says, while looking at his garden, which he has been maintaining with a lot for decades.

Wittwer spends practically every day in the allotment garden on Küssow Grund, a popular facility on the eastern outskirts of the city. His plot has been owned by him since the GDR times when he worked as a chief fitter in food and luxury mechanical engineering. "It is a nice relaxation. I like the community, even if we were more together in GDR times and the cohesion was larger," says Wittwer with a touch of melancholy. For him, the garden is not only a place of relaxation, but also a space for social contacts, even if they have decreased something in recent years.

diverse harvests and personal moments of happiness

These different experiences are reflected in the reports of the gardeners in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Apparently a mixed harvest year was in 2023. Many report a snail plague that has added its plants. Marion Kreula, another gardener in the club, also mentions a “not so dolle harvest”, but for her in particular the focus is on the sense of community. She is helping her neighbors whose plants are pouring while they are on vacation and takes care of their dog. "We help each other. We feel very comfortable here and have already met a lot of people," she says.

For Marion, the allotment garden becomes the second home in summer. From June to September she can be found here regularly and even partially sleeps in her gazebo. "You are finally out of everyday life here," she beams, giving the feeling that the time in the garden is more than just a way to harvest fruit and vegetables. It's about friendship, help and the joint experience of nature, even in difficult times.

In Neubrandenburg, the crops of the allotment gardeners show that the garden is not only a place of cultivation, but also a place of social interaction. Despite the challenges that the weather and other figures of the garden bring like the snails, the joie de vivre of garden lovers remains unbroken. The focus is not exclusively on the quantity of the harvest, but rather to spend time in nature and to strengthen the community.
