Unemployment rate in Wiener Neustadt continues to increase: causes and forecasts

unemployment increases in Wiener Neustadt

The unemployment figures in Wiener Neustadt have increased again and achieve a worrying level. At the end of the last month, 5,317 people were unemployed, which represents an increase of almost 500 people compared to the previous year. This development illustrates the continuing weakness on the labor market in the region, such as Mevlüt Kücükyasar, head of the AMS office in Wiener Neustadt.

In particular, industries such as construction, transport and accommodation as well as gastronomy have a significant increase in unemployment. The unemployment rate is currently 7.5 percent, the highest value in Lower Austria. At the same time, the number of employed employees stagnates around 53,535 people compared to the previous year.

In the first half of the year, 2,700 vacancies were successfully filled in Wiener Neustadt. Nevertheless, there is a declining trend on the job market, characterized by a 6 percent decline on the average of the first half of the year. Currently, 1,150 vacancies are registered with the AMS in Wiener Neustadt, which corresponds to a decline of 17 percent compared to the previous year.

Despite the increasing number of unemployed people and open positions, many positions remain vacant, since the qualifications of the job seekers do not always match the requirements of the companies. Mevlüt Kücükyasar emphasizes the importance of qualification measures in order to better coordinate supply and demand and thus fill jobs.

In the long term, Kücükyasar expects unemployment to decrease despite the current economic challenges. The demographic change, in particular due to the retirement of the baby boomer generation and the lower offspring of workers, is expected to lead to a decline in the unemployment rate in the coming years
