24,000 votes against right: giant protest in Hanover!

On February 8, 2025, a large demonstration took place in Hanover under the motto "Stop right pressure", organized by the "Grandma's against Right" initiative. According to the police reports, around 24,000 people took part in the event instead of the expected 1,000 participants. The opera square served as a central meeting place for the protest campaign, which was directed against right -wing tendencies in politics.

The demonstrators moved from the main train station over the Kröpcke to the opera field, where Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) gave a speech. In his speech, he described current events in the Bundestag as a "taboo break" and asked to stand up for democracy every day. Evangelical superintendent Rainer Müller-Brandes also commented on the relevance of integration questions and criticized the right rhetoric. In addition to the speeches, there were also tensions, as a few hundred people slogan against an AfD election status on the Kröpcke.

Protest actions and mandatory

The police intervened and protected the AfD campaigners from the demonstrators, who tried to surround the AfD election campaign stand. There were violations between the participants of the demonstration and the election campaigns. Some chanted among the demonstrators: "Nazis out". In parallel to the protests in Hanover, there were also several demos nationwide against the right movement in Germany. Various further actions took place in Lower Saxony, including human and fairy lights.

The organizing groups, including "Grandma's against Right", warn of the dangers that the right rate in politics could bring for democratic achievements. In Bremen, an action under the motto "Bremen holds together" recently mobilized 20,000 to 35,000 participants against right -wing extremism. These demonstrations are part of the preparations for the upcoming federal election on February 23, 2025.
