Spring awakening of the change toad: Protect our endangered amphibians!
in Lower Saxony begins with spring the high season for amphibians, especially for the strongly endangered change toad. This type of amphibian, which is characterized by its characteristic greenish stain patterns and yellow-green eyes, is becoming increasingly active in the region because the temperatures rise and the first toads can be produced from their winter quarters. The reproductive period of the interchangeable toad extends until June, with the animals being active, especially in warm-humid nights.
The interrogation (Bufo Viridis) is one of the most endangered amphibian types in Germany and can only be found in Lower Saxony in the districts of Helmstedt and Wolfenbüttel, also occasionally in the Goslar district. The preferred habitats of this kind are low -vegetation, steppe -like areas with sonshone. Originally, the alternating toad was native to larger rivers, nowadays you can mostly find them in secondary habitats such as mining pits and industrial areas.
Important information on the protection of the change toad
Because of its hazard, the NABU launched the project "Creation of Habitats for the endangered change toad", which calls for citizens to report observations of toad toads. It is important to provide precise information about the location, such as coordinates or card markings, as well as a photo of the animal. Change toads are strictly protected in Germany, and it is forbidden to disturb them. The reports from the population are crucial for the preservation and protection of this endangered way, since they contribute to the discovery of previously unknown occurrence.
In addition, the change toad in Europe is widespread. Their reproduction period extends from April to May, with the female spawning cords letting with 2,000 to 15,000 eggs. The destruction of small waters, garbage, fertilizer, environmental toxins and succession are at risk. Therefore, the protection of the change toad is not only a local, but also a Europe-wide challenge, since it is "strictly protected" according to the FFH Directive and the Federal Nature Conservation Act.
