The aircraft, a Basler BT-67 with the flight number CGEAJ, circled a few hundred meters over the towns of Seeburg, Seulingen and Gieboldehausen. It flew repeatedly and returned to the north several times.
The plane started from an airfield near Hildesheim shortly after 9 a.m. and returned about the Eichsfeld about every 30 minutes. The last flight before the return flight to Hildesheim took place shortly before 12 noon. Flight enthusiasts had already sighted the Basler BT-67 at Hildesheim Airport in March. The machine is registered in Canada and flies for the British company Bell Geospace, which carries out geophysical measurements from the air.
Details about the flight operations
The exact measurements carried out during the flight are currently unclear. According to Bell Geospace is the standard flight height of the aircraft 80 meters over open areas and 300 meters above buildings. The plane can capture up to 1,600 line kilometers on one day, with more than 1,200 kilometers on many days. A limited factor for the detection duration are turbulent air ratios caused by the midday heat at low heights.
The Basler BT-67 is more robust compared to other platforms compared to turbulence, which reduces the total acquisition period. Typically, two pilots and a surveying technician are on board on the survey flights. It is important to note that the sensitive equipment is usually only used in quiet weather, usually in the early morning or late in the afternoon, the daily flight time for these surveys between 4 and 8 hours.
