Matthias Miersch has also been actively involved in the field of environmental protection legislation, in particular as a member of the environmental committee of the Bundestag from 2005 to 2017. Within his parliamentary group, he is considered part of the parliamentary left, the greatest current in the SPD parliamentary group. He has also been a spokesman for this group for almost ten years and has been the deputy chairman of the parliamentary group since 2017.
