At the age of 76 to the lifeguard: Klaus saves his swimming lake!

a fidele commitment to the community

in Stade, Lower Saxony, a 76-year-old man shows how much commitment and determination in the older generation. Klaus Klär, lovingly known as the "Baywatch-Klaus", has quickly decided to become active as a lifeguard to keep the bathing lake in Fredenbeck alive. His goal: to offer children and families a safe bathing experience and thus save a significant part of community life.

the bathing lake as another elixir of life

The bathing lake that Klaus and his wife Sylvia has been running for eight years is more than just a place to swim. He attracts many visitors with a sandy beach, a lawn, a kiosk, a children's playground and a mini golf course. The cheap admission prices in particular make the lake attractive for families: children up to school have free admission, while young people up to 16 years only have to pay two euros.

an unexpected setback

The swimming season was on the brink when the new mayor announced that no swimming was allowed without a swimming. "It was over for the time being," reports Klaus. However, his reaction was unconventional: instead of being discouraged, he reported to the German Life Rescue Society (DLRG) to acquire the lifeguard certificate.

a remarkable role model

Klaus Klär is a fascinating example of active retirement provision in the community. In a year of hard work, he was able to perfect his swimming skills, completed the training as a lifeguard and demonstrated his fitness in various exercises in the water. "Klaus, we give you the course. But be warned: you also have to be able to save," he got to hear from the DLRG. And he accepted the challenge.

The importance of security in the water

The initiative of Klaus is particularly noticeable in view of the current DLRG statistics: This year over 250 people have already drowned in Germany. This shows how important it is that swimming pools and lakes are occupied with qualified swimming to ensure the safety of the bathers.

a new chapter for the bathing season

Now, with the lifeguard license in the pocket, Klaus clarifies the light to the swimming season in Fredenbeck. "Finally everyone can go swimming again and recover from everyday stress," he says radiantly. Klaus continues to prescribe a healthy lifestyle to watch over his beloved bathing lake for many years.

an example of determination

Klaus’s action not only inspires his fellow human beings, but also shows that it is never too late to bring about a positive change in the community. Instead of adjusting a lifeguard, he took the initiative himself, which underlines its character value. "That's me," says Klaus with a smile while he pursues his passion for the bathing lake.
