The high school "In the Desert" in Osnabrück implements an innovative concept for career orientation for schoolchildren in grade 11. As part of a two -hour subject, the school specifically prepares its students for the challenges of professional life. An essential element of this initiative is close cooperation with regional partners. Among other things, professional advisor Peter Schröder from the Employment Agency is at the side of the classes, while Sabine Boberg from the AOK of the seminar "Goodbye Hotel Mama!" offers.

Particular attention is paid to the financial education of the students, which includes topics such as budgeting, financial planning, taxes and insurance. In addition, there are regular workshops and events in the auditorium, where IHK training ambassadors inform about various professions and industries. Guest speakers such as Carsten Bente from the federal police, Prof. Dr. Robert Gillenkirch on economic studies, as well as Klara Schulz about years of high school after graduating from high school, also contribute to the diversity of the offer.

The school's professional orientation concept also includes a two -week internship in the 11th grade, regular career advisory services from the employment agency as well as visits to project fairs and university information days. Cooperation with the Central Student Advisory Service (ZSB) of the University and University of Osnabrück supports the students in their professional decisions. To promote practical experience, the school also participates in the project "5 days - 5 companies" and organizes company visits and participation in the "Abi Future" trade fair.

The initiative for career orientation also fits in the context of the national educational strategies, which the BMBF funded by founding the Education Chains initiative in 2010. In particular, care is taken to support young people during the transition to professional life and to counteract the shortage of skilled workers. A central element of this initiative is the professional orientation programs that help to recognize and promote talents and interests of the students. As part of these programs, the BMBF has approved over 852.7 million euros by December 2023 to achieve more than 2.1 million students.
