Lamb season in Nindorf: Heidschnucken gave birth to pitch black lambs!
In the Hehmsoth Schäferei in Nindorf, the Lamb season of Heidschnucken began. Jörk Hehmsoth, his son Heiner and his partner Johanna Preuße look after the sheep and check every two to three hours whether the animals have obstetrics. Heidschnucken are a robust sheep breed that is particularly suitable for the conditions in the region.
Already 105 linen creatures have born lambs that are in the “kindergarten”. The first Heidschnuckenlamm was born on February 26th. These newborn lambs are initially pitch black and develop a brown fur during the following weeks. After the birth, mother and lamb pull into small boxes, so -called stoking to get used to each other in peace.
Care of the lambs and hopping season
If necessary, the lamb is raised with the bottle, especially for first -time masters who have twins. Around ten lambs per year receive support for a good start. Mothers and lambs spend two to four days in the stokes before moving to kindergarten. There the lambs are provided with ear tables and receive a dose of selenium to promote their health. Kindergarten takes several weeks before the lambs are led to the dikes on Aller and Weser.
The lamb season lasts until June, with most lambs being born in April. In mid -May the fun season begins, in which Heidschnucken and goats are used on nature conservation areas. Heiner Hehmsoth and the employed shepherd Sabine Klatt lead the herds with two dogs. Heidschnucken are particularly useful because they can use 30% pulp, while goats even use up to 70%.
The sheep farm has so far not listed any losses from the blue -tongue disease or wolf cracks. All animals are vaccinated and the shepherds invest a lot of effort in protecting the herd. The landscape is made in consultation with nature conservation authorities, which means that the heath of heather contributes to the spread of plants by transporting seeds in their wool and keeping the grass briefly on the dikes to promote root growth.
