Coffee tax: Germany's most popular drink brings billions!
The German customs administration took an impressive 62.4 billion euros in consumption taxes in 2023, of which around one billion euros were from the coffee tax. Coffee, the most popular hot drink of the Germans with a per capita consumption of 169 liters, remains an important source of income for the state. These high tax revenues support essential public services and future investments in education, research, infrastructure and social affairs.
Historically, coffee has been an estimated luxury food in Germany since the 18th century when the private import was heavily regulated. The coffee consumption bloomed at the time, which led to the establishment of a coffee monopoly. In addition to the coffee tax, other taxes such as alcohol, beer and tobacco tax are part of the significant income of customs that help to secure the foundation of important social benefits in the country.
