According to an analysis of the Allensbach Institute for Demoscopy, 48 % of Germans have a preference for hiking. The upcoming autumn makes this leisure activity particularly attractive because it offers optimal weather for extensive tours in nature. But where can you find the most sought -after hiking trails in Germany? Beyondcamping has already examined 282 of the most famous hiking routes in the country for the fourth time to find out which routes are most paid to for hikers and on social media.

The results of this comprehensive analysis about the popularity of the hiking routes are based on the monthly search queries on Google and the number of hashtags on Instagram. Here are the five most popular hiking trails that have conquered the hearts of many nature lovers:

The top 5 hiking trails in Germany

  1. The Höhenweg Rennsteig in the Thuringian Forest is unchallenged in first place. With over 68,000 Instagram hashtags and 18,100 Google request, he is the favorite among hiking friends.
  2. in second place is followed by the Rothaarsteig, which crosses the highest summit of North Rhine-Westphalia, the 843 meter high Langenberg. This path reaches an average of 43,000 hashtags and 9,900 search queries per month.
  3. The Rheinsteig took third place with 36,000 hashtags and 9,900 Google searches. This varied hiking trail between Bonn and Wiesbaden offers both challenges and short tours.
  4. The Moselle dough, the fourth best way, convinces with its landscape diversity and attracts 27,000 hashtags and 6,600 Google inquiries per month.
  5. The painter path takes fifth place. This culturally inspired path combines art and nature and enjoys 23,000 Instagram haash tags and 9,900 Google search inquiries every month.
  6. The Rennsteig, as the longest and most famous of these paths, captivates up to 100,000 hikers every year. It extends over 169 kilometers and can be divided into up to eight stages. From Hörschel, near Eisenach, the path runs over the ridge of the Thuringian Forest, whereby hikers are rewarded down into the valley and up to great viewpoints. In order to make access easier, there is a shuttle service on weekends that is intended to tie the region more on public transport.

    The Rothaarsteig, which extends over 154 kilometers and leads from Brilon to Dillenburg, is also remarkable. The stages vary between 8 and 24 kilometers, which makes it suitable for both advanced and beginners. Another advantage are the numerous public transport connections to the hiking trail that enable flexible journey.

    The Rheinsteig, on the other hand, brings a combination of charming vineyards, rugged rocks and picturesque forests. With a total length of 320 kilometers and 21 possible stages, it is the ideal way for hikers who appreciate both challenging and relaxing tours.

    Another Highlight among the most popular hiking trails is the Moselle dough, which extends over 365 kilometers and accompanies the entire German banks of the Moselle. With its 24 stages, this path is not only suitable for experienced hikers, but also for families and casual hikers. Thanks to public transport connections, the circular hike through this scenic region is possible without any problems.
