Heat action in Offenbach: This is how our city remains cool and worth living

In Offenbach, the citizens are currently experiencing a continuing heat wave that is well above the nationwide average. The city administration prompted the current Situation to actively implement its heat action plan. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the temperature in Offenbach is an average of 11.1 degrees Celsius, while the nationwide average is 9.7 degrees. In the summer months, the deviation is even greater: Offenbach is 2.6 degrees warmer than the average, which is heavily stressed by the residents.

In order to ensure relief at these extreme temperatures, the city introduced various measures to cool off around two years ago. The heat action plan revolves around three main categories: long-term strategies, preparatory measures and ad hoc campaigns. Long-term initiatives include information brochures, the installation of refill stations and a program for promoting climate adjustments. Among other things, this should support the use of green roofs and the creation of more green areas.

Measures for health care

In terms of acute heat cases, the city has set up a system to quickly inform the population. If the DWD warning is heated, the notification is made via local media. There are specific measures during these warnings: for example, senior meetings close at temperatures from 32 degrees earlier. In daycare centers, it is also ensured that the children have sufficient water and water -containing fruit. Information materials for heat prevention are provided on the OVB information boards to draw attention to the increasing temperatures.

A special heat brochure for older people is currently being revised. This project is part of a larger plan that includes the support of 16 specific climate adaptation projects, including facade greening, green roofs and the creation of cisterns that serve the rainwater storage. The city administration emphasizes that Offenbach is one of the few municipalities in Germany that acts so proactively and has implemented a comprehensive heat action plan.

political initiatives and challenges

In order to better meet these challenges, Mayor and city council should exchange ideas with organizations that take care of homeless people. It is about developing suitable measures to ensure effective heat protection. In its proposals, the left sees at short notice approaches that can be integrated into the existing heat action plan. Through these measures, the city wants to ensure that, regardless of their life situation, every citizen is able to deal with the increasingly warm temperatures.

The information campaign and the development of new retreat options are important steps to meet the challenges of climate change. In a climate that is increasingly characterized by high temperatures, it is of crucial importance for local governments to respond to the needs of their citizens and to develop proactive solutions.
