Tradition meets modernity: Mathias Zarnoch becomes a pump master in Wildeshausen

An old tradition is revived in Wildeshausen: Mathias Zarnoch has been appointed the new pump master. This is not only a return to historical roots, but also a step into a modern future that is aware of the importance of water points in the city.

The pump master's return

With the appointment of Mathias Zarnoch, a centuries of heritage in Wildeshausen is revived. His office as a pump master comprises the monitoring of the existing water points and the support of the still active pump communities. Zarnoch said that he wanted to "have an eye on pumps and wells", especially in places where there are no more communities. He even bought a special service clothing that is reminiscent of old traditions: a black suit, a white shirt and a cylinder, supplemented by a silver chain with his name.

guided tours as part of community activities

Zarnoch plans to pass on his knowledge of the water points in Wildeshausen. As part of tours that he heads on behalf of the traffic association, he not only wants to present historical facts to those interested, but also tell exciting stories. The first tours are already planned at the pump festival on August 4th. At 2 and 4 p.m., visitors to the fountain on the marketplace can learn more about the history of the pumps. He is supported by tour guide Evi Hellmann, who will be dressed as a maid.

The importance of historical water points

The city of Wildeshausen was once a center of water supply with numerous pumps and wells, which had played an important role since the 17th century. In 1655 there were already 14 public water points; In the 19th century, 17 fountains were even counted. However, the historical water landscape has significantly reduced the decline in this water supply in the 20th century, when many households were connected to the public network. Currently there are only eight pumps in operation, but there are plans to create new pump places at historically documented locations.

Future -oriented urban development

Mayor Jens Kuraschinski is enthusiastic about the revival of the pump tradition. This initiative fits perfectly into the “Wildeshausen 2030+” urban development concept, which aims to make the history of the city tangible. By actively working on the return of the pumps and wells, it not only does justice to tradition, but also improves the quality of life of its citizens and the attractiveness for visitors.

Development in Wildeshausen once again shows how important it is to preserve the historical heritage and at the same time find innovative solutions to integrate cultural heritage into the present. Mathias Zarnoch and his role as a pump master are an excellent example of how tradition and modern urban development can be successfully combined.
