University of Osnabrück

The University of Osnabrück said goodbye to Prof. Dr. Joachim Hertzberg after 20 years of committed activity. Under the motto "20 good years in Osnabrück", the renowned computer scientist reflected on his formative experiences and milestones at the university during his farewell lecture. University President Prof. Dr. In her speech, Susanne Menzel-Riedl paid tribute to the important contributions that Hertzberg has made to his specialist discipline and the university as a whole.

Prof. Hertzberg, who saw the light of day in Kiel in 1958, launched his academic career with studying computer science in Braunschweig and Bonn. He obtained his doctorate in 1986 after a doctorate on the representation of the real world from a planning -oriented perspective. Supported by a renowned scholarship of the German People's Study Foundation, he further expanded his knowledge before moving to the Helmholtz Institute to Sankt Augustin after a postdoc phase.

Scientific research fields

in the two decades at the University of Osnabrück, Hertzberg devoted himself as a professor of principles close to computer science with a focus on knowledge -based systems of the further development of artificial intelligence and robot -based planning. His research areas range from plan -based robot control to the interpretation of sensor data to agricultural nobotics. For his outstanding achievements in artificial intelligence, he was appointed fellow by the European Association for Artificial Intelligence (Eurai), which is an outstanding honor in his subject.

In addition, Hertzberg played a crucial role in the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), where he has headed the research area of plan -based robot control since 2011. The expansion of the DFKI branch in Osnabrück to the Lower Saxony location, where he most recently worked as a managing director, is particularly remarkable.

Farewell ceremony and worthwhile

The farewell party in the Bohnenkamp-Haus, surrounded by the beautiful botanical garden of the university, attracted numerous companions and colleagues. Among the well -wishers were prominent colleagues such as Prof. Dr. Oliver Vornberger and Rüdiger Eichel from the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture, which praised the top role of Hertzberg when establishing the DFKI location in Lower Saxony. Also Prof. Dr. Andreas Nüchter from the Julius Maximilians University in Würzburg did not miss the opportunity to give his former doctoral student the best wishes.

In his summary lecture, Hertzberg expressed his gratitude and said: "For twenty years I was able to help my area with teaching and research at the university, strengthen the topic in the Osnabrück environment and work together with clever and committed people from many institutions. That was a privilege and joy!"

The event, moderated by Prof. Dr. Tim Römer, Dean of the Department of Mathematics/Computer Science/Physics, shows an impressive picture of the appreciation of how the academic community recognizes the merits of Prof. Hertzberg.
