Youth-it is complicated: Funny WG adventures in Berlin

The new ZDF comedy series "Youth-it is complicated" takes the audience into the turbulent life of a Berlin flat share that is full of clichés and challenges. The colorful characters Cathrin, Tim, Sophie and the idiosyncratic neighbor Frank promise an entertaining journey through the ups and downs that young life in the big city brings. The stories reflect situations that are understandable for young adults in urban environments, be it the struggle for affordable rents or the search for great love.

In the first episode, Cathrin, played by Sarah Gailer, is confronted with reality when she decides to give up her unpopular job with a pedantic gallery owner. Together with her best friend Tim, who works as a freelance theater maker, she wants to dare a new beginning. To fill up the WG again, it organizes a casting and soon meets the English -language Sophie (Eli Riccardi). The dynamics between Sophie and Tim are quickly complicated, especially at a party that has a turn in their WG relationship.

The search for happiness, love and money

in the eight episodes that can now be seen online and will be broadcast on ZDFneo from September 10th, the searches of the characters are accompanied for happiness and financial stability of slapstick moments. One example is Tim's humorous, but also revealing examination of his privileges, which leads to a misleading relationship with a package messenger. Cathrin also comes into a bizarre situation when she pretends to be a man online to be taken more seriously, which ends in a chaotic date with an art historian.

The characters, who are described by the producers as "friends, neighbors and family, but especially people in search", offer a multifaceted picture of the challenges with which every young adult can identify: from constant lack of money to the confusion of relationships.

A conscious studio concept

Behind production are Stefan Stuckmann as the author and director as well as the producers Simon Ostermann and Hannah Dörr, who together made the decision to shoot the entire series in the studio. In this way, they wanted to create a special atmosphere that not only accepts the artificiality of the set design, but actively hugged. Ostermann and Dörr emphasize that the conscious decision for a clear studio look enables focus on the actors and the stories. They say: "To explore the right degree of artificiality and thus prepare a perfect stage for our ensemble was always the top premise."

"Youth - it is complicated" thus relies on proven entertainment that brings a breath of fresh air to the genre of sitcoms. With a high identification potential and a pinch of humor, the series captures the uncertainties and hopes of the young generation that are looking for their place in a pulsating metropolis. The stories are not only entertaining, but also relating, as they treat typical problems with a humorous note that is important for many viewers.
