In Osnabrück, an important competition is launched, which is aimed at children and young people and deals with a pressing topic: hatred on the net. Under the direction of police director Michael Maßmann, the police, the Zonta Club of Westphalian Peace and the prevention association Prevos continue to use their highly valued cooperation and invite young people to submit their creative contributions by November 8, 2024. The competition is entitled "Together against hate on the net: what can we do?"

The initiative aims to include the youth in the discussion about respectful coexistence on the Internet. "Internet and social media are now unavoidable for each of us, especially for the younger generation," explains Lidia Wübbelmann, President of the Zonta Club. However, it emphasizes the positive aspects of the online world, but warns of the dark side: "More and more young people see themselves exposed to insults and exclusion, which is a form of mental violence." These insights underline the relevance of the competition and the need to counteract the phenomenon of cyberbobbing.

creativity as an expression of the opinion

For the competition, all forms of creative expression are welcome. Whether short stories, podcasts, songs, plays or video clips - there are no limits to the imagination. The police hope that the best submissions will not only be rewarded, but also reach a general public. The organizers want to set a strong signal against the growing wave of online hatred.

Martin Schmitz, Managing Director of the prevention association, emphasizes the importance of a respectful way of dealing on the Internet: "The sound in social media becomes rougher, and often the inhibition threshold for insulting or threatening statements decreases." With this competition, the organizers want to ensure that young people not only consume passively, but actively stand up for a positive culture on the Internet.

The challenges of the digital world are a special burden for children and adolescents. This program is intended to encourage them, deal with the dangers of the Internet and learn methods to defend themselves against online hatred and bullying. Police President Maßmann asks the youth to raise their voice about creative contributions and to find solutions together to make the digital world safer.

The police will also support the competition by presence in schools and youth centers. "The education and awareness of young people is an essential part of our prevention work," explains Maßmann.

All interested young people can submit their contributions by e-mail to competition@zonta-westfaelischer-friede.de. The organizers expect a variety of creative ideas that set a strong sign against hate on the net.
