Save peace!: Exciting outdoor escape room in Osnabrück

Insights of the story through modern toys

On Sunday, August 11th, the city of Osnabrück becomes the scene of an exciting and educational initiative, in which history can be experienced in an entertaining way. The Institute for Cultural History of the Early Modern Times (IKFN) of the University of Osnabrück invites all citizens to an outdoor escape room entitled "Rette the Peace!" a. This modern treasure hunt is not only a game, but also a way to experience an important part of the story up close: the Osnabrück handshake of 1648.

The historical importance of the event

The Osnabrück handshake is an important part of the Westphalian peace, which marked the transition to a new era in European politics. The Swedish main sent Johan Oxenstierna played a central role in this historical process. By participating in the campaign, the participants can not only expand their knowledge of the peace of 1648, but also understand the importance of these events for today's political structures.

for who is the treasure hunt intended?

The event is aimed at families, young people and everyone interested. Participation only requires a smartphone and a flyer, which is available in various locations such as the town hall, the Marienkirche and the forum at the cathedral. Participation is free of charge, which facilitates access for the general public.

This is how the modern scavenger hunt

works

The course of the event leads the participants to four historically occupied locations of the peace congress into the old town of Osnabrück. Participants have to solve various puzzles to find the missing Johan Oxenstentera. The combination of active participation and the direct connection to the history ensures that the participants can put themselves in the people from that time, explains Prof. Dr. Siegrid Westphal, who developed the project with your working group.

a day full of activities

The entry into the event day takes place with an ecumenical peace service in the St. Marien Church. The offer is supplemented by guided tours by the bishop's garden and short lectures on the historical city model. These different program items serve to convey a comprehensive image of local history and create community.

The added value of the project

Patrick Hövels, member of the student working group, emphasizes the added value of the escape room. He hopes that this innovative form of experience will help to raise awareness of a wider audience to the topic and to make the historical knowledge that is often perceived as too academically.

You are cordially invited to take part in this unique experience and to discover the history of Westphalian peace under a new, exciting light.
