The rebirth of the Härtsfeldbahn: Nostalgie meets tourism
The revival of the Härtsfeldbahn is not only a remarkable step for railway enthusiasts, but it also strengthens the tourist attractiveness of the Ostalb region. This historical railway line, which made operational connections possible from 1901 until its decommissioning in 1972, has developed into a popular goal for visitors and now connects two important sights: the Benedictine monastery Neresheim and the picturesque Härtsfeldsee.
The history of the Härtsfeldbahn
originally served the Härtsfeldbahn, lovingly called "Schättere", the promotion of goods and travelers between Aalen and Dillingen on the Danube. After their decommissioning, the tracks were dismantled and most vehicles were sold or scrapped. These developments led to the memory of the railway line threatened to forget.
commitment to revival
The enthusiasm for the railway remained with some citizens. In 1984 the 'Freundeskreis Schättere' was founded, which was converted into the Härtsfeld Museum Railway (HMB) a year later. With the help of volunteers, numerous original vehicles were restored and the beginnings of a historical museum in Neresheim took shape. In this way the inheritance of the Härtsfeldbahn was preserved.
Important tourist development
The fact that the revival of the railway has a significant influence on the region is particularly evident in the restoration of historical connections to tourist attractions. The reconstruction of the railway line began in 1996 with the first section of Neresheim and was ceremoniously opened on October 20, 2001, the 100th birthday of the railway. In the following years, further sections were constructed to the Härtsfeldsee, with the last being put into operation on August 1, 2021.
plans for the future
The association has ambitious goals: Another section should lead from Härtsfeldsee to Dischingen in order to expand the connection and make the region even more attractive to visitors. The old station building in Dischingen was acquired by the club members and plays an important role in the future plans.
tourist activities and outlook
The Härtsfeld Museum Railway regularly offers trips between Neresheim and Katzenstein on weekends. This requires passengers the unique opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the region and at the same time immerse themselves in the history of the railway. Local event instructions and the timetable can be found on the museum association's homepage. Visitors should also consider the impressive castles of the Swabian Alb, which are only a short journey from the train.
