Iran's new President Peseschkian: unchanged support for Hisbollah

Middle East: Iran's new president is behind Hisbollah

The new Iranian President Massud Peseschkian has confirmed his support for the Hisbollah and Iran's anti-Israel course. In a message to Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Lebanese Hisbollah, Peseschkian promised that Iran would continue to support the resistance front against what he described as an "illegitimate Zionist regime". He expressed hope that the Hisbollah and other groups could prevent Israel from continuing his "warlike and criminal politics".

The Hisbollah, a Shiite militia, is largely supported by Iran and occupies a clear anti-Israel posture both politically and with military violence. Nasrallah had sent his congratulations on Saturday on the occasion of Peseschkian's election and praised Iran's "strong" support for resistance in the region.

Peseschkian, who is considered a relative moderate compared to other Iranian politicians, prevailed against a hardliner in the runoff election on Friday and is expected to swear in early August. Despite his moderate rhetoric, he stood behind the mighty revolutionary guards in the election campaign and praised the drone and rocket attack on Israel in April.

The extent of Peschkian's influence on foreign policy remains unclear because the highest religious leader, Ajatollah Ali Chamenei, is the most powerful player in Iran. Chamenei has a significant influence on the political decisions of the country, especially in questions that affect the Middle East.
