Xenophobic symbols at EM fan festivals: Integration council intervenes

slogans on Euro 2024: Integration council in Remscheid discusses effects on the community

In the past few weeks, right-wing extremists have made statements and symbols at EM-fan festival in Remscheid for a stir. These incidents were observed by members of the city's integration council and have led to discussions about the effects on the local community.

Although the police have not received any official complaints, the chairwoman of the Integration Council, Enden Ankay-Nachtwein from the SPD, is concerned about the use of right-wing extremist symbols such as the wolf greeting. In an interview with Radio RSG, she emphasized that such signs must not be tolerated, regardless of her political origin. Athletes should be free of extremist statements, according to Ankay-Nachtwein.

The wolf greeting, which was shown at the EM fan festival, is a symbol that is associated with right-wing extremist groups and is monitored by the protection of the constitution. Nevertheless, the use of this symbol is not punishable, as a police spokesman confirmed.

The discussions in the Integration Council aim to preserve a unit in the community and to combat extremism in any form. The members of the Council hope that open discussions and sensitization campaigns can raise awareness of the dangers of extremist statements.

The incidents at the fan festivals during the euro 2024 have shown that Remscheid has to face the challenges of extremism and discrimination. The Integration Council is committed to ensuring that the diversity of the city is respected and that all citizens can pull together without fear and prejudices.
