From Lost Place to Wohntraum: Perleberg's old barracks awakening to new life

In the small town of Perleberg, which is located in the Prignitz district, there are significant changes. The old barracks buildings, which have been considered "Lost Places" since their closure after the withdrawal of the Russian soldiers in 1991, are to be renovated and converted into attractive living and business premises.

a look into the past

The barracks look back on a long and varied story. From the end of the 18th century to 1991, Perleberg was a garrison city, which was used by various military troops, including artillery regiments and later Soviet forces after the Second World War. This historical use has left visible traces, such as coat of arms and old construction methods.

renovation and modernization in planning

The GWG Wohnungsgesellschaft mbH, led by Ronald Otto, is planning a comprehensive renovation of the buildings. With an investment of around 50 million euros, the seven barracks buildings, including the largest with an area of 10,000 square meters, will be tackled. Otto emphasizes that the building fabric is very well preserved, so that the renovation looks promising.

a new usage concept

An important part of the plan for the future of the barracks is the creation of a harmonious living and business environment. In addition to living spaces, dormant services are offered, i.e. institutions such as co-working spaces, medical practices and smaller cafés that should contribute to the revival of the district.

economic importance and funding

The city of Perleberg and the GWG hope for financial support from urban development in order to partially cover the renovation costs. The funding could cover 40 percent of the costs, which would be significant relief for the housing association. The population is eagerly awaiting the start of construction, which is to start in the next twelve months after approval of the funds.

attractiveness of the Prignitz increase

The renovation of the barracks buildings could not only be of great importance for the region, but also for commuters from big cities such as Berlin and Hamburg. The GWG sees potential for new life in Prignitz, especially for specialists who are looking for attractive living opportunities. With a complete infrastructure, including schools, Perleberg could soon become a sought -after place of residence.

The upcoming conversion of the old barracks is another step towards revitalized urban development, which not only promotes the preservation of historical building fabric, but also creates fresh living space for current needs. Ronald Otto's positive perspective and the planned investments speak for themselves: "Prignitz can be attractive again."
