Flood risk in Bad Wurzach: City council demands urgent measures

The latest flood events in Bad Wurzach have shaken the local community and raised awareness of the challenges of climate changes and strong rainfall. During a council meeting on July 29, numerous citizens and municipal councils urged solutions to improve flood protection. The department head for surface waters at the district office, Stefan Häussler, informed about the causes and possible measures.

The causes of the problem

The extreme rainfall - 200 liters per square meter within 24 hours - contributed significantly to the flood. This happened over a period in which the soil was already saturated by previous rains. "The saturation was 110 %," said Häussler. The problem is reinforced by the low gradient of only 1.3 meters over a river course of 900 meters, which leads to a slow flow rate. This also deposits moor sludge, which further increases flood susceptibility.

The role of the community

During the session, citizens like Herbert Oelhaf expressed their concern about the rising river levels, which have been higher in the past. These comments testify to a deep understanding of local hydrology and the associated challenges. Municipal councilor Klaus Schütt and Bernhard Schad vehemently demanded immediate removal of obstacles, especially trees that hinder the water flow. The commitment of the citizens shows how important local participation is in questions of environmental protection and infrastructure.

necessary measures to improve flood protection

One of the central demands was the dredging of moor sludge to increase the flow ability of the water. Berthold Leupolz brought this idea, although Häussler pointed out that he is currently not a need for action. However, there is agreement on a comprehensive inspection with everyone involved to better understand the conditions on site and to plan targeted measures.

the look into the future

In view of the increase in heavy rain events, it is crucial that the drain capacity is recalculated and adapted. Rainer Deuschel emphasized the need to adapt to the new climatic conditions. The interaction of floods, the geological conditions of the region and human action must be re -evaluated in order to develop effective protective measures.

common responsibility and future planning

Häussler warned against looking for simple solutions that could only postpone the problem. Responsibility for avoiding damage is not only among the authorities, but also among the citizens, who should take measures to help themselves. Mayor Scherer emphasized the importance of pulling the right conclusions out of the events and taking proactive steps to counter future challenges.

Although the challenges are great, it turns out in Bad Wurzach that through joint exchange, critical discussions and innovative solutions, new ways can be found that focus not only on the community, but also the environment.
