Rescue of the moor frog: Oberschwaben becomes an amphibian oasis!
Rescue of the moor frog: Oberschwaben becomes an amphibian oasis!
in Upper Swabia, the habitat of the rare moor frog, the populations rise again after years of dramatic threat. Thanks to the commitment of wild animal ecologist Moritz Ott and the moor frog project of the Ravensburg landscape conservation association, the number of frogs from estimated 24 copies in 2018 increased to around 88, despite some losses last season. The breeding station in Langenargen, where tadpoles are successfully used and released into nature, plays a crucial role.
The successes in the Allgäu are particularly remarkable, where the moor frog population from 24 in 2021 rose to an estimated 108 this year. In Hesse, on the other hand, the species is almost completely extinct, which underlines the urgency of species protection. However, OTT warns of risks such as genetic inbreeding by the small inventory and the requirements of climate change. Future settlement projects are planned to promote the moor frog in other areas of the district. But bureaucratic hurdles, such as failed applications for EU funding, are a serious challenge.
