Farmers hope for improvement: Wet weather is threatened to harvest 2024

plants suffer from too much rain

The changeable weather in the Rhein-Erft region currently not only causes resentment for vacationers, but also among farmers. The unusually high rainfall this year brings some challenges for agriculture.

In particular, the potato and sugar beet farmers have to deal with increased fungal diseases, which leads to additional costs. The effects of the moist weather are also noticeable when it comes to grain. The harvest yields and the quality of the winter barley are below average because the rain made the necessary maintenance measures in spring.

The farmers now urgently hope for drier conditions to improve the balance sheet for summer wheat, rye, oats and rapeseed. The NRW Chamber of Agriculture warns of the long-term consequences of the weather that is too wet and emphasizes the importance of a stable weather conditions for agriculture.
