Alarming number of dead seals on Rügen: What is behind it?

On Rügen there is alarming messages: Another carcass of a cone seal has been discovered - the number of dead animals found since the beginning of October has now risen to terrifying 27! The latest case was found on Saturday evening between Sassnitz and Mukran, as reported by the Sea Museum in Stralsund. Initial studies indicate that many of these mammals have drowned. The investigations are still at the beginning and will continue until the end of November.

The first signs indicate that some seals may have got caught in fishing nets. While a fresh injury was found in an animal, others show no visible signs of their cause of death. Infectious diseases have already been excluded from seven of the deceased seals. Due to the worrying number of dead bowling seals, the Sea Museum filed a complaint against unknown persons and the police were investigating a possible violation of the Animal Welfare Act. Kegel seals, which were once almost extinct, have recovered in recent years, but the current situation is very concerned about.
