80 years after the end of the war: Lübeck is reminiscent of a big commemoration

Lübeck, Deutschland - On May 8, 2025, the end of the Second World War for the 80th anniversary. On this occasion, the Hanseatic city of Lübeck, together with the Evangelical Lutheran Church Circle of Lübeck-Lauenburg, the parish of St. Marien and the intercultural meeting place, organizes a commemoration under the leitmotif "Remember the future". The event begins at 6 p.m. in St. Marien zu Lübeck.

City President Henning Schumann emphasizes the outstanding importance of remembering for democracy. At the same time, Mayor Jan Lindenau indicates the responsibility of the city to actively deal with his own past. The focus of the commemoration is the memory of the victims of National Socialism.

As part of the celebration, three exhibitions are opened: The first, "right violence in Hamburg", is presented by the Hamburg memorials and learning places. The second exhibition, "Fear continues to us to this day-right attacks in Schleswig-Holstein", comes from the Center for Applied Right Attacks (Zebra). The third exhibition, "Migrant Resistance in Hamburg of the 90s", is looked after by curator Gürsel Yildirim.

Senator for Culture and Education, Monika Frank, emphasizes the high importance of the culture of remembrance. The city administration is working intensively on strengthening the Lübeck souvenir landscape. In addition to greeting by Mayor Jan Lindenau, Pröpftin Petra Kallies, Ilhan Isözen and Heidemarie Kugler-Weiemann, the program of the commemoration also includes musical and artistic contributions. A special artistic performance from the Musik-heater project Human will accompany the memory, supplemented by the musical accompaniment of the Marien organist Johannes Unger.

The accompanying program "May 8, 2025 - Remember the future" extends until June 22, 2025 and includes lectures, discussion groups and cultural events on the subject of "right -wing violence after 1945". Free guided tours by the exhibitions are offered. The program coordination is located at the cultural office of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck and the Lübeck-Lauenburg church district. In addition, on January 27, 2025, the international commemoration for the victims of the Holocaust will be committed, which is connected with a quiet memory at the memorial of the murdered Jews in Europe. This monument was inaugurated in May 2005 and is a central component of German memory culture.
