CDU triumphs in Schleswig-Holstein: AfD with historical growth!

In the 2025 federal election in Schleswig-Holstein, the CDU received the most votes and is characterized by significant profits. According to the results published on February 24, 2025, the CDU came to 27.6 percent of the second votes, followed by the SPD with 18.6 percent and the AfD, which increased to 16.6 percent. The turnout was 78.3 percent, while the SPD had to record a significant loss compared to the election of 2021. In the election at the time, the SPD still won the most second votes with 28 percent.

The CDU won the first votes in nine out of eleven constituencies. Exceptions were the cities of Lübeck, where the SPD took the lead, and Kiel, where the Greens received the most votes. The new election mode, which covers overhang and compensation mandates, means that direct mandates only go to the winners of the constituencies. An interesting detail is that a party with 20 percent of the second votes could theoretically receive 126 seats in the Bundestag if it gains 130 constituencies at the same time. In this case, only the best four candidates of the party move into the Bundestag.
