Strobelhof in Gutenstein: The last dairy farmer draws the line!
Gutenstein, Deutschland - Urban Strobel from Gutenstein has taken a historical step: he was the last dairy farmer in Sigmaringen. On Tuesday, the 17 dairy cows left the Strobelhof forever - eleven found new stables while six were brought to the slaughterhouse. This decision was made after intensive considerations and was not an easy step for Strobel, who emphasizes that he wanted to give the animals a worthy farewell. "I wanted to make sure that the cows, which are intended to slaughter, are not pregnant," he said.
The challenges for small businesses are immense: Agricultural office manager Tobias Gumpper indicates that despite a comparatively high milk price of around 50 cents per liter, the larger companies grow nationwide, while smaller ones like the Strobelhof cannot keep up. Health problems in the family and the dwindling perspective for the next generation finally contributed to closing the courtyard. Strobel is now planning to manage its 20 hectares of arable land and has already considered new perspectives for his professional future. However, the quiet days on the farm are painful: "Unfortunately, we no longer have any calves that the children can stroke," he confessed in an emotional voice.
